Drone apparently turned to the murder tool. According to CBS News and Reuters, Iraqi Prime Minister Mustafa Al-Kadhimi said he survived drone-based murder efforts today (November 7) at his home in the Baghdad Green Zone which was very safe. The State Interior Ministry said the attack involved three drones, including at least one bomb vehicle loaded. Six wounded guards during the incident, and spoke officially talking to Reuters claimed security forces to get the remains of a small drone on the scene.
While the Iraqi government openly said that it was “premature” to identify the culprit, the CBS source suspected of being the perpetrator of the pro-Iran militia who had used a similar tactic against Erbil International Airport and the US Embassy. The militia immediately blamed al-Kadhimi for the victim in the battle between Iraqi security forces and pro-militia protesters who objected to their party’s losses in the October 10 parliamentary vote.
Iraq, the US, Saudi Arabia and Iran openly condemned the attack. The militia leaders, however, suggested drone attacks may be faked to divert attention from the deaths reported by protesters.
Drone-based terrorism is not a fully new concept. Isis, for example, modified the off-the-shelf drone to drop explosives. The attack on political leaders is still very rare. If it is accurate, Iraqi plots that are reported to show drone terrorism entering the new phase – extremists use robotic leaflets to achieve large targets that are too dangerous to strike using conventional methods.
